Elementary modelling and behavioural analysis for emergency evacuations using social media

چکیده
Social media usage in evacuations and emergency management represents a rapidly expanding field of study. Our paper thus provides quantitative insight into a serious practical problem. Within this context a behavioural approach is key. We discuss when facilitators should consider model-based interventions amid further implications for disaster communication and emergency management. We model the behaviour of individual people by deriving optimal contrarian strategies. We formulate a Bayesian algorithm which enables the optimal evacuation to be conducted sequentially under worsening conditions. © 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. A Semi-automated Display for Geotagged Text
The changing dynamic of crisis management suggests that we should be leveraging social media and accessible geotagged text data to assist with making emergency evacuations more e ective and increasing the e ciency of emergency rst responders. This paper presents a preliminary visualization tool for automatically clustering geotagged text data, and visualizing such data contextually, graphically...
متن کاملFusing non-authoritative data to improve situational awareness in emergencies
In order to coordinate emergency operations and evacuations, it is vital to accurately assess damage to people, property, and the environment. For decades remote sensing has been used to observe the Earth from air, space and ground based sensors. These sensors collect massive amounts of dynamic and geographically distributed spatiotemporal data every day. However, despite the immense quantity o...
متن کاملInvestigating Crowd Behaviour during Emergency Evacuations Using Agent-Based Modelling
In the present paper we argue that the effectiveness of interventions/design solutions supporting emergency evacuation of crowds in socio-technical systems, depends on the appropriateness of the models used for the crowd behaviour. After reviewing basic approaches already used to model escaping crowds, the knowledge about crowd behaviour provided by modern social psychology is briefly presented...
متن کاملDisentangling the Impact of Social Groups on Response Times and Movement Dynamics in Evacuations
Crowd evacuations are paradigmatic examples for collective behaviour, as interactions between individuals lead to the overall movement dynamics. Approaches assuming that all individuals interact in the same way have significantly improved our understanding of pedestrian crowd evacuations. However, this scenario is unlikely, as many pedestrians move in social groups that are based on friendship ...
متن کاملFundamental Building Blocks for Vehicle-Pedestrian Interaction in Emergency Evacuations
Evacuations requiring large numbers of pedestrians to evacuate and potentially interact with vehicles are unique in the complexity of interactions that must be understood and in the potentially catastrophic consequences of poor management. On the pedestrian side alone, these events, which may result from a variety of causes including terrorist attacks, bomb threats, and building fires, require ...
